Energy Resource Aggregation Business [ERAB]

A Study of IoT Controller Deployment Model in the Distributed Energy Resources Environment

The research project investigated the cybersecurity challenges and opportunities associated with the Energy Resource Aggregation Business (ERAB) model and the ECHONET Lite communication protocol within Malaysia’s evolving distributed energy landscape. Drawing lessons from Japan’s successful ERAB implementation, the study assessed Malaysia’s potential for adopting similar models while emphasizing the importance of robust cybersecurity measures for Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and smart home environments. A comprehensive evaluation of ECHONET Lite revealed significant vulnerabilities due to its lack of native security features, highlighting the limitations of relying solely on external security mechanisms such as IPsec, DTLS, and WPA3. Based on testbed experiments and performance analyses, the project recommended the development of integrated security mechanisms within ECHONET Lite to ensure consistent and resilient protection for smart home ecosystems. The project has been successfully completed, and a detailed report documenting the findings and recommendations has been produced and published.
